The name dervies from Latin: Advena meaning ‘stranger’, and Nota meaning ‘familiar’. Used for an exhibition on ancient Rome, it aims to help visitors to draw parallels with their own lives and relate to everyday ancient Romans.&nbsp; While the typeface draws on ancient Roman styles of lettering, it is made distinctly contemporary through its unusual letterforms and ways of taking ancient elements of Roman typography: Its mix of modernist, sharp edges and curved,&nbsp;‘half-serifs’ pointing in the same direction. I wanted to evoke a sense of Penang through its unique heritage architecture. I was inspired by the colourful and decorative Malaysian shophouses, and its eclectic style of European and Chinese influences. With intricate motifs on the façades as the focal point, the aim for my work was to merge a contemporary design approach with a historical subject. The project aims to minimise emotional and psychological harm and distress to both staff and customers. A high contrast colour palette with bold, minimal typography helps position the initiative as assertive with a clear message. This simple yet powerful logo works both alongside Carlisle Home’s existing branding and as a standalone visual. The orange ‘O’ in ‘Zero’ also doubles up as the letter zero, tying into the name of the initiative. The hand-drawn line crossing out the word ‘Harm’, can be interpreted in a figurative sense as well as taking real-life action to prevent harm in the workplace. The informal, fast-paced, bustling vibe of Malaysian street food stood out to me, as translated through the bright red, bold and condensed typography. The halftone photographs are gritty and lo-fi. In contrast, the soft blue represents the nostalgia associated with these personal experiences with my family.
